The Royal Society of Marine Artists

Celebrating the Sea

The Society was founded in 1939 and is widely recognised for being the focal point for much of Britain's finest marine art.  The RSMA currently has an active membership numbering 54.  The Society's common theme is the sea, and whilst most RSMA Members work covers a variety of subjects, paintings submitted for the Society's exhibitions must be related to tidal waters in some way.  Traditions such as plein-air, topographical, historical, still life, and figure painting are all welcomed.  The work is representational in the broadest sense, and the range of media includes oil painting, watercolour, acrylics and pastels, as well as drawings, prints, and the occasional sculpture.

ANNUAL EXHIBITION

Each year the RSMA stages an Open Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London and any artist can submit work for consideration.

NEW THIS YEAR - DIGITAL SUBMISSION

Because it realised that for many artists it isn't always easy or convenient to physically take work to London we have introduced a digital selection phase where work can be submitted on line.  The deadline is July 12th and any work pre-selected at this stage will then have to be handed in in the normal way.  However this does offer the opportunity to have work assessed without the expense of getting it to central London.  For further details go to the news page or visit www.mallgalleries.org.uk

The Society has many links with the maritime world including the National Maritime Museum, The Royal Navy, the RNLI, shipping industry, publishing, sailing and sail training interests, and many Members are active in teaching, lecturing, and demonstrating their work.  Membership of the Society is achieved by election but the Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in October (see the News page for further details - news) is open to non-members, submitted work being subject to selection by jury.  For supporters and enthusiasts there is membership of the Friends of the RSMA.  To find out more click the links on the left border of this page.  The RSMA is a registered charity and is a member society of the Federation of British Artists based at the Mall Galleries in London.
